[Hampshire] Middle button scrolling

I have an r50e laptop, it only has a nubbin and no touchpad for
pointer navigation. What I'd like to be able to do (surely this is
possible!) is to be able to scroll up and down in a firefox/nautilus
window by holding down the middle button and moving the pointer up and
down.

Obviously whatever could do/does this would need to differentiate
between a click and a hold of the middle mouse.

Does anyone know if I can configure X or Gnome to do this?
