There exists a standard[1] for Office-style documents (word
processor documents, spreadsheets, presentation slides). This is used
by OpenOffice.org, amongst others.

Microsoft have been instrumental in developing a different
standard[2] which has been passed to ISO[3] for ratification. It is
being pushed through the process very fast.

This second proposed standard overlaps significantly in function
with the existing standard, but is incompatible. It also has a number
of technical problems which need more time to sort out. No time seems
to have been spent in ensuring that the two standards are not
duplicating effort, or in identifying and addressing the technical
problems with the new proposed standard.

The BSI[4], as members of the ISO, can block the ratification of
the proposed standard, and the UKUUG[5] is asking them to do so, and
asking people to read the list of objections[6] and write to Francis
Cave, who is the chairman of the relevant BSI committee in support of
the BSI blocking the ratification of the proposed standard.

Letters should reach Francis Cave by the end of today.

Hugo.
