Under Gnome, I don't know. Like I said, KDE has a backdrop option to
use the output of a program. Gnome may well have something similar.
Go to wherever you configure the desktop background, and look to see
if there are any advanced options which do something similar.

Looking on Google, I've found the following for Ubuntu. It's meant for
xplanet (which is a better xearth), but will probably work with xearth
with a few modifications.
