Thanks Al.  Been working through the RestrictedFormats info and the
WindowsCodecs.  It's now time for my third re-install EE.  The last set
of changes stuffed the desktop.  Every time I try to open Places/Home
Folder I get 4 copies of Nautilus.
Even yet more hair pulling.  I thought, just before I start the 
re-install, I would make one final check and download a .wmv file from a 
different source.................and the sound works!  Will now try some 
of the other tech talks with .wmv files to see if I can hear them.
