This is exactly what happened when MS were responsible for the
Government's e-portal for Tax returns. The Government said that it
should be cross-browser and MS said it would take a long time to
develop. So they rolled out the IE-only version then spent five years
"developing" the cross-browser implementation.

You simply can't trust (pun intended) that cross-platform implementation
will follow quickly or be of an appropriate standard. And what's the
point of having a trial if you exclude ~5 to ~15% of potential users?
Oh, and it would mean implementing DRM on Linux, so will certainly
involve proprietary binaries etc. You can see MS turning round to the
BBC and saying it simply "can't be done/supported" on Linux.

It is a sad state of affairs that the BBC, a supposedly independent
organisation, and Microsoft, a convicted monopolist are so in love with
each other. It was evident in the extensive free advertising that the
BBC gave Vista and continues to be evident in their approach to this new
service.
