Firstly, modprobe is the tool that is preferred for managing modules
these days because it does cool things like automatically load modules
as dependencies. Secondly, you don't need to specify the .ko extension
so just "modprobe bttv". Check man modprobe for more details.

Is there a LUG near you in the States that might be able to give you a
little hands-on help with your system? Or perhaps a training centre?
