have you tried "sux" from a non-root konsole, you may need to install
sux first,

I get this dialog:

jayell@benden:~$ sux
Password:
xauth: creating new authority file /root/.Xauthority
benden:/home/jayell# scite

scite is a gui version of vim (since I don't have any non-vim
based editors) and it opened OK
