There's a part of the arguably open source 'panotools' suite which
produces what they call 'object movies'. These movies are viewable in
any java enabled browser. It's been a while since I made one so I'm
not sure where to find it any more.
The Gimp has basic support for animation and can write the results to
animated gifs.
