\o/ Yippee! I have a useable system. Thank you all very much for your
usual generous help.
I left the alterations that I had done after Al's suggestion in place, since
I couldn't see that it would do any harm.
I tried Keith's suggestion first, but the man page didn't really help.
(There are quite copious notes in the preamble to the file itself, which
seem to say much the same things.)
I then tried Sean's suggestion - and it worked. \o/ \o/
I'll keep John's suggestion up my sleeve (or in my files!) for future
reference.
All I have to do now is edit fstab to use my separate /home - and hope that
I don't mess the new system up with some old settings. ;-)
