It runs standalone on my AMD64 machine, though doesn't work as a plugin.
Don't ask how I've achieved this though - I have various multilib
installations and 32 bit wrappers installed so I can play all the
various media formats (even got HD playback working the other day).

I know I do have a 32bit instance of mplayer built (the mplayer-bin
package on Gentoo) which probably helps. Installing this was just a
case of running "emerge mplayer-bin".

Whether there's actually a 64bit version of it I don't know, and I
know even less about getting it to work on Ubuntu.
