I think there's some confusion, in that AIUI, there are two mount
types, cifs and smbfs, of which only smbfs is deprecated. Tools for
both cifs and the deprecated smbfs types are available in the smbfs
Debian package.

This is the one you want - just install the smbfs package but select
the filesystem type (mount -t) as cifs and not smbfs.
