My httpd.conf file is blank (this was my first port of call) so can I
just can the subdomain info to that or do I need to configure
something else.

That's because the config is called apache2.conf. BUT, at least Debian (that know) puts the configuration files in /etc/apache2/sites-available and a2ensite creates symlinks to these files under sites-enabled, which apache looks at for site configuration (as well as apache2.conf). For virtual hosting, I highly recommend sticking to this setup as it keeps things simple.

Check httpd.apache.org and specifically the apache2 documentation section for info on the VirtualHost directive. On my phone at the moment, so can't paste anyting.

Hope that helps,

Alex
