Well it depends on the player. I've done just this with a cheapie
generic player that was basically a board and some plastic assemblies in
a metal box. If I recall correctly, there was some sort of latching
mechanism which disengaged the disc hub and then the tray just pulled
forward. (The player functioned fine afterwards.)
