Just in case anyone else hits this...
There's a bug in Debian unstable's nfs-common,
version 1:1.1.3-1. NFS 2 and 3 mounts appear to
default to the wrong authentication mode,
resulting in "Permission denied" errors when
trying to access the mounted share.
A work around appears to be adding "sec=sys" to
the client's NFS mount options.
