If I recall, there's a drop-down box on the address bar in 2.x as
well, although the behaviour is a little different. That behaviour can
almost certainly be changed -- looking at "bar" in about:config shows
several plausible candidates. Without knowing what you object to, I
can't really suggest anything more than that.
Use of SQLite is really not that bad. It's way more robust than,
say, BDB, it's not a large library, and quite frankly I'd prefer that
than some horrid XML mess. :)

Firefox 3 uses SQLite to store much of its internal config data
now:
hrm@joshua:cy2ff62f.slt $ pwd
/home/hrm/.firefox/default/cy2ff62f.slt
hrm@joshua:cy2ff62f.slt $ ls *.sqlite
content-prefs.sqlite permissions.sqlite urlclassifier3.sqlite
cookies.sqlite places.sqlite webappsstore.sqlite
downloads.sqlite search.sqlite
formhistory.sqlite urlclassifier2.sqlite
