Is the cable a "cable select" cable? If it is then normally it will
either have something like "IDE1" and "IDE2" written on the cable near
the drive connectors or the connectors will be different colours (1
blue, 1 black and 1 grey usually). The blue connector goes in the mobo
and the master is the end one.

I was once told by soemone who usually knows what he's talking about
that if you use a CS cable and set the drives to master and slave or
have a CS cable and set one drive to CS and hard jumper the other to
Slave (for example) there is a big performance hit for some reason.
