[Hampshire] firewall and guarddog problems

well, if i had my time again i don't think i'd bother 'upgrading' to 8.10. i
liked kde 3.5 and everything worked. i dislike kde 4 and a lot of stuff is
broken.

anyway, after the 'upgrade' failed, i decided to do a new installation.

the problem of the moment is that i can't get the guarddog settings to be
applied when the machine boots. guarddog writes /etc/rc.firewall ok, but
this never seems to be applied. does anybody know where it is supposed to be
run from?

i can run rc.firewall interactively and it works.

i tried calling rc.firewall from rc.local, but that doesn't work. i assume
that that is the wrong place!
