Subject: [Hampshire] [OT] DIAP for HE colleges - potential early evaluator thoughts needed
Hi

I'm currently writing a funding proposal to help further technical
development of DIAP (Distributed Internet Archive Protocol(Program)) - you
may have seen a few posts on this list over the past few years as the
exploratory work took place.

I am applying to JISC - "The Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC)
supports United Kingdom post-16 and higher education and research by
providing leadership in the use of ICT (Information and Communications
Technology)" through Southampton Uni and hope to win the project 6 months
part-time technical development.

DIAP has an early aplha-dev Perl application and if I am successful the
application should become a working innovation made available to all UK HE
establishments (GPL so beyond as well).

What I need to help with the bid is a short paragraph describing a potential
(theoretical) early adopter and the perceived advantages to them of deploying
DIAP along side or instead of traditional Tape or NAS devices. I'm talking
about colleges rather than Universities and not necessarily local.

If you are a sys admin or IT manager at a 6th Form college or equivalent and
have the time to respond before Monday afternoon I'd be extremely grateful.
If I can quote your HE institute then even better. Please forward to anyone
you know that may be interested.

I need a brief description of your current backup services and your
perception of how DIAP could help your college in the future in a few
sentences - 150 words max. Are there special repositories that need extra
redundancy? Could you state if I can use your statement and name of HE
institution, if not I'll use the information generically without HE name
disclosure.

The best page of the project to look at is the latest diagram (Jan 09)
http://www.diap.org.uk/diagram.html. The essentials are all there. Take a
look at the rest of the site if you have time. Feel free to ask me questions.

To respond please send me a private email (without {}'s and spaces) to: db2
{@} ecs {.} soton {.} ac {.} uk

If discussing DIAP (archiving and backup generally) then I'll respond on list.

TIA Damian
