I'd probably go along with that. I didn't realise how short of RAM it was. That being said Ubuntu with Gnome runs OK on a 1.4GHz AMD Athlon single core with 384MB I just cobbled together.

Think ubuntu will struggle with only 256mb of memory, might be better with
xbuntu which is ubuntu but with the xfce desktop as opposed to gnome
