result 1: i think we can discount ubuntu 9.04 for the aged toshiba. it took 10 minutes to get to the live desktop, applications took an age to initialise and react to mouse clicks / keystrokes. just about usuable and painfully slow.

i'll let you all know the results of the other flavours of linux suggested.
