just for the hello of it I installed CrunchBang in VirtualBox and felt
quite at home with it as OpenBox (the window manager it uses) is
somewhat similar to WindowMaker

It has a fair number of applications available out of the box,
including openoffice, cups, samba, wireless-tools, network manager,
synaptic, etc, etc. It currently has a 2.6.27 kernel.

on the downside the only email client is mutt which might suit
some people. However claws-mail or thunderbird are only an "aptitude
install" away.

It downloads as a live CD but with an install to hardisk option.
