Subject: [Hampshire] [OT] CD Players Best Suited To Audio Books
Hi Folks,

Well OT I know, but I am always astounded by the depth and breadth of
knowledge on the list, so you are my first port of call on this one.

Essentially my father is totally blind and regularly reads audio books.
He prefers cassettes because of the ease of operation of cassette decks
and the fact that they restart playback where you leave off.

Unfortunately his main supplier has just announced they are going over
to CD-only releases from the end of the month, so we are looking for a
technological solution to the problem.

We know that some CD players will resume from where playback ended -
in-car CD players do this - but we don't know if this functionality is
available in conventional CD players. Has anyone come across this? If so
which brands and types are likely to provide this functionality? It
occurred to me to mail Sony, Panasonic, etc., with this question, and
that's my next action if this query goes unanswered.

It also occurs to me that my digital media player also has this
functionality, but accessing it is accomplished by navigating on-screen
menus which robs my father of the ability to independently read, so a
bit of a non-starter.

There is also a proprietary solution to the CD-based player out there,
but I believe that it is expensive and limiting in terms of the material
that is available.

Finally I guess it would not be impossible to make a CD player from an
in-car CD player that includes this functionality. How hard and/or
expensive would it be to rig a PSU to power it from the mains? Can
anyone see any obvious pitfalls to this approach?

Sean
