I don't know if this quite fits your requirements, but I'll mention it
anyway:
If you've a PC that you could put it on, and if it's just Radio 4 news
you want, what about get_iplayer [1]. A very brief scan shows up "Six
O'Clock News, BBC Radio 4" among others. You could write a quick script
to run that, convert it to a format of your choice and then put it on a
portable mp3 player to listen to.
