Subject: [Hampshire] Gnome notification area
I've been running Ubuntu 9.10 for a while now on a couple of machines and been
largely happy with it. On my netbook it has improved a networking issue. I only
have two annoyances with it, and I can't say whether these are down to Ubuntu,
Gnome or a glitch in my install, and haven't fully investigated yet. I have
done a bit of searching with Google and not found anything useful though, so
since one issue has progressed a bit today I thought I'd post a few details to
see if anyone had seen something similar before I start digging into
configuration files and experimenting!

OK, on first install I found that Empathy (which I had been using on 9.04 quite
happily) had a minor change. When you clicked on the icon in the notification
area it used to toggle between on screen and just the notification icon. Now it
would only show it and I had to click on Close Window to hide it. Annoying, but
workable enough to ignore until I had more time.

A few days ago I noticed that the notification icon had vanished, which was a
bit more annoying, but I didn't have time to play, so left it for the time
being. Today I've noticed that Gwibber has vanished, as well as the wired
network icon, so I now have three blanks where they should be.

I've dug around and found what I believe to be the configuration file, although
I've not found sufficient documentation to be sure of this, or decipher the
various numeric codes in there - sadly there appears to be no GUI configuration
options - eek, I can't believe I just said that; where's my xterm!

As an aside, my other annoyance is Gwibber. It was never that good, but the
update to version 2 is not an improvement. It looks as though it should be
better, but performance is dire. The user interface needs a serious rethink to
my mind. There's also an annoying bug in the error when connecting to Facebook
if you have no network connection which I really must document and log.
