Open in the GIMP, go to Image -> Mode -> RGB.

Then do File -> Save As, pick "Select File Type (By Extension)",
and chane it to "Windows BMP Image". Hit "Save", and pick the
"Advanced Options" drop-down. You'll find 16-bit, 24-bit and 32-bit
options.
