Call me a purest, but I have both feet solidly in the Debian Camp. Running
Lenny on the server and Squeeze on my desktop (PXE booted from the server).
I'm not running spectacular hardware (2.4GHz P4 & 2GB Ram), but I have all the
KDE4 goodness and most of it works and is stable.
The real win for Linux, though is not Hardware or software, it's "fleshware".
It's this and all the other user groups that exist. And they're places where a
properly worded question will benefit you with an (often accurate) answer.
