O.K., I confess.
When we first heard the proposed name for this DOS overlay (1984?) it was
almost universally regarded as being really weird. This was also the view of
many of the Microsoft personnel with whom I had been working. Alternatives
were still being considered, (many included the word 'manager' I seem to
recall,) and there were those who doubted that this name would give the
customer the slightest idea what it was for. Many of us thought the final
naming decision to be a big mistake.
It is fascinating that, with hindsight, the name seems so 'normal'.
Fortunately I had discovered UNIX by this time, so I rapidly lost
interest....
