Such problems are often indicative of power supply issues - either a
failing supply, or boiled smoothing caps.

If you can get at the board, have a look at the capacitors -
cylinder-shaped things with an aluminium top. The top will be scored in an
"X" shape.

These tops should be flat. If they are at all domed, the capacitor has
failed. They can be replaced - but for a board of that vintage, you're
probably better off just replacing it.

I have some spare motherboards that would do the job fine - but I haven't
tested them yet. If they work, you'd be welcome to one.
