It doesn't need to -- the way NFS works is that if the remote
system goes away, any process attempting to access the remote
filesystem will go into uninterruptible sleep ("D state") until the
server comes back.

In the past, I've successfully paused videos in the evening, turned
off the server overnight, turned it back on again the next day, and
continued watching the video from where I left off.

However, running NFS over the internet is probably a Bad Thing,
unless you're using a VPN (and have a very reliable connection).
