Part of the reason could be that there isn't/wasn't sufficient high
quality 'free' software. In my case firefox just doesn't cut it or
hasn't done until recently. It was slow and tabbed browsing was a
nonsense compared with opera.

I need a fast browser with easy to use multiple tabs to access my
geneweb database. I have tried every available free software browser
and none of them match opera for my purposes. ver 2 of Mozilla is
getting closer but doesn't work quite the same way as opera.

I have to admit that a firefox extension called zotero (1) may
encourage me to use firefox or rather the fork calling itself
swiftfox (2) rather more for pure web browsing than opera in the
future.

Similarly xpdf just doesn't compare with acroread and as I need to
use a pdf reader every day what do you think I chose to use?

So despite my wish to adhere as closely as to Debian guidelines I do
use some non-free software to enable me to do my 'job' efficiently.
