Subject: [Hampshire] Epson Stylus Color 680 on Debian Sarge
Hi

I had a bit of an odd episode today when my ink jet printer started
spewing out garbage output. Basically it is hanging off the parallel
port of my Debian Server, and administered by cups.

I tried:
- cancelling the jobs through the cups admin tools.
- stopping and starting the printer via the same.
- stopping and starting the cupsys process.
- physically powering down and up the printer by powering off.
- disconnecting the parallel port cable.

... all to no avail.

In the end, I resorted to rebooting the server, and this worked.

Does anyone know off-hand what it was that needed stopping/purging to
resolve this without a reboot? I have had a look in /var/log/cups and
there is nothing in the logs that is telling me anything.

Finally I was quite amused to see what the kernel made of the whole affair:

Nov 30 21:04:16 minicube kernel: lp0 on fire

It's a good suggestion I didn't read this while the issue was ongoing,
or I might have taken it for a suggestion!

:o)
