Mic level inputs are balanced-mono. That is, electrically balanced signals,
but only left or right per channel. There are three termials. Hot, cold and
ground (tip, ring and sleeve on a 6mm jack plug).

Using a Mono jack will connect cold and ground terminals (there are XLR
pinouts on the web, but same idea). Then just connect a 10K variable resistor
between input, hot and ground thus (apologies if the diagram doesn't work).

In ----\/\/\/\/\/----- Gnd
            ^-------- Hot

Job done.
