Replying to my own post, how sad! Anyway...

Partly solved this one by installing the 64 bit version of Ubuntu
server, so it might me a proprietary driver issue (I think Ubuntu uses
them, but I can't confirm where I've read/heard this!), although from a
look at lsmod it may just be newer versions. That said I have HD
problems on the machine now which is slowing things down (second time,
first time the originally supplied Hitachi drive died, now the
replacement Samsung one is suspect!).

So now I have to either make myself comfortable with using Ubuntu on a
server or match the drivers into the Debian install. I guess I should
check through what I need and see which repository each package is in
and what versions they are at first.
