I have made some headway. After checking config files and comparing
setups that work against this troublesome one, I suddenly had an idea.
As usual I choose fairly strong passwords including some non
alphanumeric characters. I changed my password to just alpha characters
and it logs in just dandy. All I have to do now is locate the setting
that is messing with my character set! Still strange that it works from
the same xp laptop to my debian server. Must be an ubuntu mod.
