I have one of these[1] adapters which I picked up from Novatech[2]. I've
used it mainly for console access and transferring data from my GPS on
Ubuntu Dapper and Feisty without a problem.
lsusb reports it as:
ID 067b:2303 Prolific Technology, Inc. PL2303 Serial Port
