For those that do run CCTV there is the DPA - Data Protection Act 1998 and
an amendment since Oct 2001 to consider - 80% of CCTV footage is,
apparently, not acceptable in court as the CCTV system has not met the
recommended standards. If you run one or two fixed 'view only' cameras
then you are not in breach of the law, perhaps. However if you use the
footage in an investigative way, i.e. analysing a persons activity
(zooming can imply this activity) or display footage unnecessarily then
the footage is invalid. Quality and other factors are taken into account.
The line between legal and illegal is a little blurry. Here is the
