That was pretty much my thought process too! I couldn't get the whole
IMP/Horde thing working, so went with squirrelmail. It's good but plain.
Roundcube is much nicer, and almost at it's v1.0 release.

However, I'm going to keep squirrelmail around, as it's found a new
lease of life for me: It works brilliantly over GPRS using Opera Mini on
my phone and it's plainness means I won't spend a fortune on data charges!
