I doubt if it is, it is more likely the gui thingy that sits between
you and the OS.

open a terminal and type ifconfig (as root) and hit enter you should
see something like:

eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:0C:6E:E6:E1:F8
          inet addr:192.168.1.6  Bcast:192.168.1.255
Mask:255.255.255.0
          inet6 addr: fe80::20c:6eff:fee6:e1f8/64 Scope:Link
          UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:2859736 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:2258212 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:2556916794 (2.3 GiB)  TX bytes:260771766 (248.6
MiB)
          Interrupt:16 Base address:0xe000

lo        Link encap:Local Loopback
          inet addr:127.0.0.1  Mask:255.0.0.0
          inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
          UP LOOPBACK RUNNING  MTU:16436  Metric:1
          RX packets:2138155 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:2138155 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
          RX bytes:1506728840 (1.4 GiB)  TX bytes:1506728840 (1.4 GiB)

if you get something like this then all is well
