Er.. yes, but how do I find out which sane-backends are installed?
There are separate lists for the different versions of SANE.

That is why I need to know which is installed, hence my original question.
If there is some other way I can find out which SANE backends, or version of
SANE, that particular version of Xsane uses, I would be most grateful to be
told what it is. I have, as I said, made a great deal of effort to help
myself, but am stuck.

But not how new your distro needs to be to make use of that support. That
info is given by version. (See reference above.)
