Generally that is the attitude I take, however there is a small group of
people who I will reluctantly help, basically family and a few close but
computer clueless friends.

In this case I won't be able to get to the computer in question for at
least a few weeks so ideally I need something which I can send them and
then talk them through on the phone :(

That's why I'm thinking a live CD design for recovery might be better than
just simply a Ubuntu CD.
