I've had fun with xorg in the past... One suggestion I have is to always keep
copies of the files around and use symlinks to them. For example I have:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root 16 2007-09-02 13:46 xorg.conf -> xorg.nvidia.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root 2.0K 2007-06-13 23:07 xorg.nv.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root 2.4K 2007-09-03 15:17 xorg.nvidia.conf
I started with a stock xorg.conf file created by Debian xorg. From that I
manually added the correct screen settings for my PLE435S screen. I also
removed all screen resolutions that I didn't want.
I also maintain two versions, one with the more stable by only 2D xorg nv
driver and a second with the unstable but fancy 3D proprietary nvidia driver.
Because they are symlinked I can switch between them easily.
When you make changes always snapshot your current version, so you have it to
fall back to at a later stage...!
