With regard to the grub prompt - I think you need to give it a 'kernel' line

something like :-    kernel=/boot/vmlinuz

(Sorry, I haven't got my book here with me, so I can't be more precise)

If I remember, you need the hard disk, the partition, and the kernel
locations.
(Also initrd if used)
