Thanks to all those who have replied.

I think the problem I have with my SuSE 9.1 CD-R disks is that I kept them in
a shiny cardboard folder that originally held an earlier version on genuine
CDs. It might have done something nasty to their surfaces. By polishing them I
got the first disk to work, but the installation failed on the second -
various files were not readable. I am not happy with SuSE anyway - no easy way
for me to update the system any more.

I had a look at the Debian installation manual. Am I right in thinking that
installation should be as easy as for SuSE - i.e. mostly automated?

How easy is it to install individual programs? Is there an equivalent to
YaST?

Lisi - I think I will take up your kind offer, after reassurance on the above
points, but I am not sure yet just which CDs would be needed (I have no DVD
drive). As you say, there are a lot of them.
