Thanks for pointing that out Simon. That makes it trivial to implement,
good old Debian :-)
So /etc/network/interfaces for John should now be...
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
auto mybridge
iface mybridge inet dhcp
bridge-ports eth0 eth1
