I recently discovered something quite cool that you can do with the
instant messenger application "Pidgin". Add an account (right click
taskbar icon, click accounts, or add one on first startup) which uses
the Bonjour protocol.

Once you do that it will seek out people nearby have also added this
ad-hoc protocol.

They will be listed in your "buddy" list for the duration that they and
you are in proximity whereupon you can click their name and chat with
them as you would with a traditional instant messenger client. No server
is required however, the discussion happens directly over whatever
network you have.

Quite neat if you have a bunch of people in a venue (such as a developer
conference :) ) and want to be able to get in contact with people who
may be in another room.

Cheers,
Al.
