My granddaughter, now twelve, has been a Linux fan for some years. At 10 she
was proseletysing at our local school "Grandma, they haven't even _heard_
of Linux."

She loves the games available for it. She is not in general a computer
lover - but always enjoys what she and I do. "Linux is fun." Her current
favourite distro, which she is very afraid that I may suddenly remove
from "her" computer, is PCLinuxOS 2007.

Word processing is "boring" - unless she is doing something interesting I have
suggested in OpenOffice.org. I have not enlightened her that I could
probably make Word (which they sadly use at her school) less boring for her
if I tried. Why would I want to?? ;-)

PCLinuxOS 2007 has many of the same advantages as (K)Ubuntu, but I personally
prefer it. If I make it to the December LUG meeting I'll bring a copy of the
Live/Install CD for you/your son to look at. I'll also aim to bring Puppy
Linux, which might well give your old laptop a new lease of life. Tho' I
have to admit that many of the LUG members could probably get it running well
with Ubuntu.
