I knew there was a reason for not installing acroread-plugins, the
multimedia site states:

"This package contains plugins who enable javascript in acroread and
thus make acroread able to send to a remote host which pdf files you
are reading. See http://lwn.net/Articles/129729/"

In April 2005 I wrote to Christian Perrier as follows:

"This isn't a bug-report as such but just a comment on the recent
release of acroread without a dependancy on acroread-plugins.

Whilst this solves the problem of acroread phoning back home whenever
you open a pdf file it also 'throws the baby out with the bathwater'.

Without the plugins the search facility within acroread is lost and I
really need that facility as I regularly access a 32 thousand+ page
document in the course of my genealogy research and trying to find a
specific part of that document without a search facility is tedious to
say the least."

I had a reply the same day saying the problem was fixed in the next
release. So I've not installed the plugins since.
