I'd never heard of Backtrack[1] before, so this may be wrong, but
it looks like it's a LiveCD distribution, which means that it runs
direct from the CD and won't touch the hard disk at all. (In your
case, it's running from a virtual CD, and won't touch the virtual hard
disk at all). Instead, it will use RAM disks (tmpfs, probably) to
store files. Since a RAM disk is just an area of RAM, it won't be
preserved across a reboot of the machine (or the VM, in this case).

Looking at the documentation for Backtrack, it seems that you can
do a hard disk install of it, which is probably what you want.
