That, it seems, was the problem. The 386 kernel had been installed
alongside the specific "server" kernel. For some reason the 386 kernel
doesn't have software RAID support in its initramfs. Either rebuild the
initramfs or remove the 386 kernel and make the "server" one the default
on boot.
