Subject: [Hampshire] maximum memory use for a process

I'm hoping to pick the collective brains.

I'd like to find a way to keep a record of the maximum memory used by a
given process. Now, I know top can give me that information, but it's
really a real time monitor, and I know could write a script to periodically
interrogate top in non-interactive more and parse the output, or look at
/proc/<pid> (which is what I will do if nothing better presents).

But neither of those are sure to grab the absolute maximum memory use.

So, is there a command like, for example, "time" which, instead of
processor time used, gives the (maximum) amount of memory?

Thanks,

Chris
